Kents Hill School provides perfect host venue for 2013 Maine Games State Fencing Championships April 13

READFIELD, MAINE; April 15, 2013 - Many Mainers may be unaware that fencing has a strong and growing presence in the Pine Tree State, but on Saturday a number of Maine’s fencers competed in the 10th annual Maine Games State Fencing Championships at Kents Hill School.

Eighteen athletes earned Maine Games gold, silver, or bronze medals in saber, epee, foil, and electric foil events, and all medalists this year qualified for the 2013 State Games of America being held this summer in Hershey and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

This annual fencing event is now the longest continuously running event in the Maine Games, having begun in 2004, in the Maine Games’ second year of operation.

This summer’s State Games of America marks the first time that our national amateur sports festival will offer fencing as a competitive sport and with the Keystone State Games acting as the host of this year’s event, organizers are expecting a very strong and competitive field with qualified State Games fencing medalists from all over the country attending. More than 9,000 amateur athletes are expected to compete in more than 30 different events being held between July 31 and August 4. Venues for SGA events this summer include the Giant Center, the Milton Hershey School, and the Pennsylvania Farm Show (with more than 1 million square feet of exhibition space under one roof).

Maine is expected to be represented by athletes in a number of sports including figure skating, powerlifting, table tennis, fencing, cross country, track and field, and more. At the 2011 SGA, in San Diego, 13 Mainers brought home 11 medals, including three gold, in figure skating, powerlifting, and table tennis. This year’s SGA represents the first time that this bi-annual event has been held east of the Mississippi River since 2003 (Hartford, CT).

Saber: Jeff Eagen (m) gold, Jacob Crane (m) silver, Christopher Gibson (m) bronze, Thomas Garland (m) bronze, Elizabeth Tonkin (f) gold.
Epee: Justin Very (m) gold, Ben Flood (m) silver, Alexander Edison (m) bronze, John de Villier (m) bronze, Olivia Jernigan (f) gold.
Foil: John de Villier (m) gold, Eli Davies (m) silver, Matthew Dyer (m) bronze, Thomas Garland (m) bronze, Christina Sours (f) gold, Joanna Garneau (f) silver, Samantha LeBlanc (f) bronze, Rachel Haynes (f) bronze.
In addition, Jeff Eagen earned a USFA national E13 Ranking in Saber.

This event was held for the first time at Kents Hill School, with their coach Chris Gibson acting as meet director. He was supported by Jeff Eagen. The Maine Games Fencing Commissioner is John Krauss (10th year).

The Maine Games is the official State Games member of the National Congress of State Games, which is part of the United States Olympic Committee’s Multi-Sport Organization’s Council.

Happy New Year

Here are some of the upcoming confirmed and tentative tournaments for the 2012-2013 season.  We have no word from Portland if they are going to be hosting any, but the Augusta club is moving into a larger room in the Buker Community Center this winter which may make small tournaments possible, stay tuned…
